What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is like Internet real estate. If you want to build a house, you need a place to build it and roads to get to it. Similarly, if you want to build a website, you need server space to store your files and bandwidth to access your site.

To put it simply, this means obtaining disk space and the required access and security configuration on a computer (known as a server) permanently connected to the Internet, that holds your website files and makes them available to the rest of the world.

One difference is that while a house has a permanent street address that can't travel with your house if you choose to move it, you can move your website around the planet and point the address (the domain name) to wherever the site is located.

A domain name is your address on the web.

What types of domain names are there?

The domain suffixes differentiate between the various types of organizations on the web. For example, these are the primary generic TLDs (Top Level Domains):

.com - businesses and commercial enterprises
.net - network-related enterprise
.org - charitable or non-profit organizations
.biz - businesses and commercial enterprises
.info - unrestricted
Large organisations with an existing IT infrastructure may elect to host the server themselves, but most sites are hosted in "rented" space in ISPs or specific hosting companies. Setting up your domain can be a complicated procedure. We have a long-standing relationship with a number of hosting comapnies and know their system back to front. We know who to contact for fast response in the case of something going wrong (very rare) and we get a bulk discount (20%) so we can pass the savings on to you.

When we set up a hosting solution for you, we charge you the set-up fees and 6 months in advance. After the first 6 months, we will bill you for another 6 months so that you benefit directly from our 20% discount.

Hosting plans differ on the size and build of your site. When you request a web site quote from us, we will then present the hosting costs to you.

We will register the domain names in your name and you will own them, but we will have access as the domain administrator or technical contact (depending on the system) so that we can make any required adjustments.

With Lucid Horizons managing the process the costs are:

.com .net .org .info .biz -
Set-up $65.00 (including the purchase of the domain for the first year) then $30 per year for renewals.
These can be renewed for up to ten years.
